Ascot Restaurant – Zurich

It’s not often that the thought occurs to dine in a hotel restaurant. But the menu at Ascot Restaurant looked like a varied and interesting one.

Ascot Restaurant had a spacious dining area with cushioned booth areas. Huge orchids and low lighting contributed to the ambience. The staff were really polite and made sure that everything was right for us for our meal.

For drinks, we opted for hot water. This came presented on a tray with the cup and an ornate teapot.

As asparagus was in season, it felt right to have the asparagus lemongrass soup. The vibrant green asparagus soup was creamy and hearty. The other starter of carrot and ginger soup was too gingery. It had a coconut and lime sour cream but that did not mellow the soup. Soup and fresh bread slices were good to start off the meal.

The potato gnocchi was freshly made. Soft pillows of the gnocchi were coated in a spicy tomato pesto. A golden brown rosti made a good addition. It was crispy on the outside and very tasty. The rosti is a speciality of Switzerland.

There is always room for dessert but even more so when all the dessert varieties are brought out on a tray for us to choose. Ascot Restaurant had a selection of miniature desserts of the day. There were fruit based ones as well as chocolate ones.

The mango dessert was a layered one. It had an apricot puree on the bottom topped with a mascarpone mousse and a mango puree. The flavours were wonderful. For a lighter option, there was yogurt with chopped berries.

Ascot Restaurant gave us a quality dining evening and the food was presented well. It made us think that other hotel restaurants should be tried.
