Le Repaire du Lion – Lille

This creperie was found at the top end of the old town. Just a side line, the boulangerie opposite called Au Lion d’Or does amazing croissants. A short walk away is also Aux Merveilleux de Fred. Here you can have big or small delights of melt in the mouth meringues and cream. An absolute treat.

Back to the lunch of crepes, Le Repaire du Lion is a wonderful creperie. Bricked walls and a modest sized dining area is this restaurant. The walls are decorated with a nautical theme and Bretagne signs. This indicated that Le Repaire du Lion did crepes from this region.

The staff are friendly and attentive. After ordering the Vegetarienne Galette, the chef came out to make sure he cooked the egg the way I wanted it. He gave me the option to have it scrambled or just on top.

The galette was just how I had requested it. The egg was cooked well. On top of the egg layer, there were chunks of courgette, peppers and aubergine. The addition of diced potatoes made a nice touch. The only thing was that the galette was slightly oily, maybe due to the potatoes. The cheese was omitted to make it a lighter lunch and to allow the flavours of the other ingredients to come through.

For dessert, a staff recommendation of Pom’caramel was had. It was a lot bigger than expected. Diced apple and salted caramel sauce topped a folded crepe. A separate serving of vanilla ice cream and Chantilly cream completed the dessert. The apples still had some bite to them and all of the components went well together. It felt like this crepe was a few desserts rolled into one and each mouthful could give different flavour combinations.

Le Repaire du Lion was extremely busy at lunchtime and it was a full house for most of the time. The creperie also had a lower level.

It was quite pleasing to have come away from the main grand place to have lunch. A big bonus was to have such a delightful lunch at Le Repaire du Lion.
