Pier Eight – Salford

The Lowry is an arts centre, full of exhibitions, art installations, a theatre and galleries. A treat after a trip to the theatre was having a meal at The Lowry’s Pier Eight restaurant. Pier Eight has a setting of waterside views. It was nice to have lots of time to relax while dining, to chat and reflect on how enjoyable the show was.

To start off our wonderful meal, the Spring Vegetable Minestrone Soup was had. This light soup had small cubes of the vegetables. The saffron based broth was poured over the vegetables at the table by the waitress. There was a slight tang to the soup but nothing overpowering. Bread and butter was done differently by Pier Eight by giving us a couple of slices of sourdough bread with tomato butter. This came on a slate. The tomato butter was lovely with the fresh sourdough bread. It was nice that the starter soup was not too filling.

The second course consisted of fish and chicken dishes. The fish option had the cod done in two different ways. The pan fried cod was cooked just right and flaky. The soft flesh contrasted with the crispy skin. The salt cod croquette was not at all salty as expected. The potato with the salt cod was balanced well. To bring the dish together, there was a lemon butter sauce, peas and kale.

Roast chicken is always a favourite. Pier Eight gave a roasted chicken breast that was succulent and juicy. It came with the cooking juices like a gravy. A small stack of carrots gave a bright colour to the plate. Baby leeks and pickled mushrooms went well with the chicken. The big portion of new potatoes were very moreish with the garlic and herb butter.

There is always room for dessert and this meal was no exception. Layers of the different chocolate mousses made up the Triple Chocolate Gateux. A scoop of cherry ice cream and praline curd topped a chocolate crumb. There was also a tart cherry sauce. This dessert had all the flavours of a black forest cake. Even though it was a chocolate dessert, it was not too rich. There was a great contrast of textures.

A fresh fruity dessert was the Coconut Panna-Cotta. This was pretty to look at with the white layer of the panna-cotta set against the yellow passionfruit jelly. Lots of shavings of toasted coconut, roasted pineapple, white chocolate and edible flowers made up the topping. The creamy coconut panna-cotta was wonderful with the tangy fruity jelly. The tropical flavours of the coconut, passionfruit and pineapple were delightful.

The presentation of the all of the food at Pier Eight was pleasing to the eye. The food was of a high quality and all fresh. The staff were great with their attentive and polite service. The restaurant area is spacious and the decor is sleek.

Pier Eight is a special restaurant and makes dining out an occasion to remember.
