Mrs Marengo’s – Soho

Reviewed on May 23rd, 2011 by Dina

Nestled in the heart of Soho is this lovely cake shop! Mrs Morengo’s is a small cafe made up of only a few white tables and pink cushioned high stools! There are quite a lot of cakes, some displayed in the window, others along the side shelf and the rest by the main counter.

Most of the cakes were displayed uncovered and there were only about three cakes that were protected by the cake covers. As we’re not fans of uncovered food, this really did limit our choice. This was a shame as all of the cakes looked delicious and had tempting names!

For our tea and cake afternoon, we had the lemon and pistachio cake, and the chocolate and pecan brownie. The square portions of the cakes were of a good size!

The lemon and pistachio cake was tangy and really moist. It was topped with a layer of chopped pistachios in a lemony sauce. The combination worked well!

I didn’t try the chocolate and pecan brownie. But just from looking at it, it looked really rich and would be a good choice for someone that loves chocolate! It was topped with a few pecan halves!

We had the Early Grey tea to share. This was served in a small metal teapot and there was enough for a couple of cups each.

The staff at Mrs Morengo’s were friendly and relaxed! They gave good service and didn’t rush us, even though it was coming close to closing time!

Mrs Morengo’s is a nice cake shop to go to if you are looking for a quality sweet treat! It’s a shame that the seating is quite limited.

Megan’s Delicatessen – Chelsea

Megan’s Deli is the perfect place for a Sunday brunch! This café is small and cute and has small seating areas over a couple of floors. What makes this café special is if you head down the steep stairs, it opens out into a little outdoor garden area.

Here it feels like you have been transported into some sort of country house garden. The tables are dressed with green chequered tablecloths and there are bowls of fresh fruit on the tables. If you go a little earlier in the afternoon, then your luck should be in to catch some of the sunshine in this walled garden area.

There are a range of items and drinks for the Sunday brunch.  A great way to start off is with the freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s of a good size and very refreshing. The scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection and served with some hearty thick granary bread. A filling meal for a lazy Sunday and there were no complaints at all with this brunch!

Megan’s Deli also serve salads and quiches. These seemed to be on a self service basis from the counter inside. It all looked fresh but I would have preferred it if the food had been covered in a counter fridge and also if it was served by the staff.

The staff were good, friendly and relaxed. They did not bother us or rush to take our order. But it was easy to get their attention when we were ready to order!

Megan’s Deli is definitely one of my top places to go to for brunch and I’m sure that I will be returning for another lazy Sunday brunch!

Caffe Nero – Stockholm (Vasastaden)

Reviewed on January 6th, 2011 by Dina

First thing that I have to say is that this Caffe Nero is not the same as the chain of Caffe Nero’s that we have in the UK! It has the same name but that’s where all the similarities stop!

On display were the colourful range of pastries and sweet things, all of which looked very tempting! If sweet food is not up your street, then there are ready prepared sandwiches in the counter fridge. These could be toasted and they had various fillings which looked fresh!

We were looking at what we thought were cakes/eclairs in one of the glass cabinets. But when it came to ordering, the staff told us that these cakes were actually frozen desserts. So that narrowed down our choices, but we still had a lot that we could choose from!

Tea was a perfect way to start the day! Caffe Nero had red, green and black tea, so I had the caffeine free red tea! It was served by the cup with fresh tea leaves. I was glad that I was given a large cup!

Caffe Nero had a range of mini pastries, biscuits and the like! Instead of going for one pastry, I had a couple of items! One was a cylindrical biscuit covered in chopped nuts and a creamy hazelnut filling. The biscuit was not too crisp and not too soft either; just very yummy!

My second delight was a mini apricot tart. I wasn’t a big fan of this item as the layer of jam was too thick. Even though it was small, a couple of bites was enough for me.

At first when we walked into Caffe Nero, it looked like it only had the few seats at the front. But then, as we walked further by the counter, we saw that the seating area extended round to the back, so that the counter actually became the centre of the cafe! Each area had different coloured seats!

Caffe Nero had a relaxed atmosphere and the staff were nice! They gave service with a smile. One thing was that there was no visible menu for the drinks. It would also have been better if all the food had been covered or had been behind the counter, as some of it was and some of it wasn’t.
