Coco Momo Cafe Bar – Marylebone

Reviewed on July 5th, 2011 by Dina

Coco Momo gives a better impression from its exterior in comparison to its interior. It looks like a nice place but when we entered, it felt very untidy and messy.

There was an area of comfy seating at one end and at the other, there was a big bar area. The remaining area was made up of wooden tables and chairs.

We found the staff to be quite rude and impolite at Coco Momo. Everytime we asked one of the staff a question, it felt like we were bothering him. The service was ok, but nothing special.

Coco Momo has a limited menu on Sundays, which is when we were dining here. It is a shame that they don’t serve the bar menu on a Sunday afternoon as there were quite a few items that would have been nice to have. These included wraps and nachos.

I ended up having the broccoli soup. It was quite a creamy soup and it made a nice meal with the few slices of granary bread that it came with.

For drinks, Coco Momo does juices and smoothies. The guava and mango smoothie was really good. The taste of the two fruits definitely came through and it was a fairly refreshing drink!

Coco Momo definitely disappointed us especially with its staff and the general ambiance of the place.

54 – Farringdon

Reviewed on June 1st, 2011 by Dina

What stands out from our dining experience at 54 was the absolutely fantastic service that we experienced. It felt like the staff really went out of their way! It is not very often that you feel so welcome in a restaurant.

54 had lots of dishes that took our fancy! For the starters, we had the classic prawn crackers. We were presented with a square bamboo basket of fresh prawn crackers that were still warm and crunchy!

The Roti Chanai was a lovely starter too. The flaky roti bread was already cut into triangles and came with a small dish of dhal. The dhal was fairly thick and went well with the bread!

The mushroom green curry was my choice of main dish but my only hesitation about it, was that I was not sure if it was going to be too spicy. Hence, I asked the waitress if I was able to try a little of the sauce before I ordered the dish.

The waitress was great as she brought out a little sample to taste. The same went for the fish soup; she let us taste it before we ordered!

The mushroom green curry was a mix of field mushrooms and green beans in a coconut curry sauce. It had a good flavour, not too strong and was fairly mild. It came with a portion of jasmine rice.

The other dish of chicken noodles made with shredded chicken, yellow egg noodles and vegetables was a satisfying choice. It had plenty of flavour and the whole dish was cooked well.

All of our food was of a generous size. You could tell that effort had also been put into the presentation of the dishes!

The waitress was so friendly and good with her suggestions on what to order. She advised us to try the different curries. Also, as I was concerned about the spiciness of the curry, she said that I could have some yoghurt to make it milder, if I needed it!

I love coconut water but not the sweetened versions. Coconut water was one of the drinks on the menu, so I had to try it. When I asked if it was fresh and natural, one of the staff came and gave me a complimentary one!

The drink was perfect: sweet coconut water with big chunks of coconut! I was given a little fork so that I would be able to eat the coconut!

54 had a lovely decor with wooden screens segmenting the dining areas. It also had an open kitchen. 54 had a wonderful relaxed, friendly atmosphere, great service and staff and all in all good food too!

Mrs Marengo’s – Soho

Reviewed on May 23rd, 2011 by Dina

Nestled in the heart of Soho is this lovely cake shop! Mrs Morengo’s is a small cafe made up of only a few white tables and pink cushioned high stools! There are quite a lot of cakes, some displayed in the window, others along the side shelf and the rest by the main counter.

Most of the cakes were displayed uncovered and there were only about three cakes that were protected by the cake covers. As we’re not fans of uncovered food, this really did limit our choice. This was a shame as all of the cakes looked delicious and had tempting names!

For our tea and cake afternoon, we had the lemon and pistachio cake, and the chocolate and pecan brownie. The square portions of the cakes were of a good size!

The lemon and pistachio cake was tangy and really moist. It was topped with a layer of chopped pistachios in a lemony sauce. The combination worked well!

I didn’t try the chocolate and pecan brownie. But just from looking at it, it looked really rich and would be a good choice for someone that loves chocolate! It was topped with a few pecan halves!

We had the Early Grey tea to share. This was served in a small metal teapot and there was enough for a couple of cups each.

The staff at Mrs Morengo’s were friendly and relaxed! They gave good service and didn’t rush us, even though it was coming close to closing time!

Mrs Morengo’s is a nice cake shop to go to if you are looking for a quality sweet treat! It’s a shame that the seating is quite limited.
