Sperun – Split, Croatia

Reviewed on February 27th, 2011 by Dina

It’s always good to get recommendations from the locals on where to dine when you’re in a new city! Just like many other visitors in the city, we would have most likely have gone to one of the tourist hot spot restaurants along by the seafront. But we were told about Sperun, which was only a few minutes walk from the seafront.

Sperun was decorated on the outside by lots of greenery and plants. Inside, this restaurant had a really rustic feel to it and felt like it had plenty of character. The white stone washed walls contrasted with the dark wooden furniture.

The waiter seemed a bit abrupt at the start but then mellowed out as he was taking our order and also as the evening went on. There was a big table in the middle of the restaurant which had dishes such as grilled vegetables, olives, and other cold starter dishes.

Initially, I was going to order the chargrilled vegetables, but then I realised that they were going to be from this open display. The waiter did say that we could have them warm; he could microwave them for us.

I don’t usually chose pasta but on this occasion, I thought that I’d give it a try. My meal was simple spaghetti in a tomato sauce. I was so glad that I had this dish. The spaghetti was cooked well and there were chunks of tomato in the dish. The sauce was really flavoursome and had a sweetness to it.

The portion size was small but just right for me. If I had been given more spaghetti, I would have found the dish just that little bit too heavy.

The food was tasty from Sperun! We even considered going back to this restaurant on another night!

La Porchetta – Camden Town/Chalk Farm

La Porchetta is a great Italian restaurant! I have always just had pizza at this restaurant, but this time, as I was with my brother, we also decided to sample some of their starter dishes!

The Funghi Ripieni reminded me of a Spanish tapas dish, just because it was served in a little clay pot! This starter of stuffed mushrooms was lovely and it was in a rich tomato sauce. I’m not too sure what the mushrooms were stuffed with but they were very tasty!

The deep fried calamari was another good starter. The rings of calamari were not greasy and went well with the tartare sauce and the sweet chilli sauce!

Now onto La Porchetta’s pizzas! The Vegetariana pizza was a tomato based pizza. It said on the menu that it had mixed vegetables for the topping, so I wasn’t sure which vegetables I would be getting! The pizza did not disappoint. It was generously topped with spinach, olives, artichokes, and peppers.

Portobello Ristorante Pizzeria – Notting Hill

Great quality pizza and a lovely atmosphere is what you get at Portobello Ristorante Pizzeria! The restaurant is fairly small and you can see the big dome wood burning oven situated at the back of the dining area. There is also an outdoor seating area, which looked like it would accommodate the same amount of diners as the inside of the restaurant.

The interior of Portobello Ristorante is quite rustic! It has big wooden beams along the ceiling and bare stone brick walls. It is good that the windows can be fully opened as well, so on a warm summer’s night, it is ok to sit indoors.

We were given some good thick slices of crusty bread to start with! The pizza here is served by the half metre which means that you can order and sample different types of pizzas!

The pizza is impressively served on huge wooden boards that take up most of the table! We had the Ortolana pizza and it did not disappoint. It was topped with grilled aubergines, peppers, cherry tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, capers, olives and mozzarella. The base of the pizza was perfectly cooked: thin and crisp!
