Yerbabuena – Madrid

Finding pure vegetarian food in Madrid can be a slight challenge. Then like buses, two come at once. One was a vegetarian/vegan buffet place and then just opposite was Yerbabuena.

The staff were friendly and we were given great service. The decor had a lime green and orange theme. There was soft music playing in the background.

A complimentary tapas style starter was given. This was a delightful tasty little selection of salad, crackers and a green mango puree dip. There was also some sort of a vegetable nugget which was made with sweetcorn and possibly tofu. A brown seeded roll came with the starter.

Yerbabuena had two main dishes that we opted for. One was the Musaka de Berenjenas. This mussaka was made up of layers of aubergine and cooked potatoes. To bring it all together, there was a soy bolognese sauce, soya beans, lentils and vegan cheese. The hearty gratin was topped with cracker shreds, broccoli and some salad.

The second dish was Paella Vegetariana. This was a wonderful mix of mushrooms, peppers, carrots, peas and soy. Even though the paella was made with brown rice, it was not hard rice. The rice had been cooked well and the whole dish had loads of flavour.

At the end of the meal, a sweet fennel tea was given. Yerbabuena was definitely a good find of a vegetarian restaurant not far from the centre of Madrid.
