L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele – Baker Street

L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele is famous in Naples. It was made even more popular as it was featured in the movie Eat, Pray, Love where Julia Roberts says “I want someone to look at me the same way I look at pizza”. There was not a chance to visit this pizzeria in Naples.  So the next best thing was the opportunity to visit it when they opened a branch in London.

The wall at the entrance is dedicated to the founder Da Michele and it has all the history and origins of this pizzeria. This restaurant has a striking floral theme with its pretty flower covered ceiling. This is contrasted with the dark marble decor. There is a small seating area at the front and a bigger seating section at the back. The open pizza kitchen connects the two dining sections. Julia Roberts’ film quote is portrayed in neon lights on walls at the front and the back of the restaurant. The staff were courteous and efficient. L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele does not take reservations.

A simple Margherita pizza was chosen to get the real flavour of the dough and the tomatoes. The pizza was served within 5 minutes after ordering. A big steaming pizza was presented and instantly the aroma was wonderful. The pizza base was thin and it had a fluffy crust. A rich tomato sauce, basil and the two cheese varieties of Agerola fior di latte and pecorino Romano made this pizza absolutely delicious. It was supposed to come with seed soy oil but I asked for it without.

L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele definitely did live up to the expectations of the Neapolitan pizza. To end the pizza outing, it is nice to venture to the lovely Regent’s Park for a little stroll.
