Brusce – Bologna

on

After a gorgeous day in Florence seeing the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duamo) and exploring the area by the River Arno and Ponte Vecchio, our bodies were ready for a good dinner. Back in Bologna, the Quadrilatero area was headed to. This area is known for good quality food and produce. The streets are adorned with plenty of restaurants and the area is close to Piazza Maggiore.

Brusce caught our eye as on their food board, vegetarian lasagne was advertised. There is outdoor seating but this evening we opted to be seated indoors. The inside of the restaurant is quite compact and small. The staff are really friendly and give lovely service.

Brusce is all about healthy seasonal food and some items on their menu changes daily.  The Bruschetta was a great choice to start with. Pieces of toasted bread were topped with chopped tomatoes, garlic and basil. The centrepiece of this starter was the Burrata di Andria.  Cutting into the burrata ball revealed the cream and stracciatella. The creamy burrata with the rich tomatoes was just delicious. Simple ingredients provided maximum flavour.

Brusce did a modern take on the classic Parmigiana di Melanzane. Fried aubergine slices were stacked with slices of mozzarella, chopped tomatoes and basil leaves. It was all drizzled with a light herb dressing. Again, the simplest of ingredients made for such a tasty dish. The aubergine, mozzarella and tomatoes had real depth of flavour.

The Vegetarian Lasagna was made of seasonal vegetables, local cheese, bechamel sauce and mozzarella. It had a good balance of the vegetables and pasta. Even though it was made of cheeses and creamy sauce, it was not a heavy dish. The balance of each component of the lasagna was perfect.

Roasted potatoes were our side dish. Cubes of perfectly fried potatoes were great to munch on and were moreish. They came presented on a wooden board.

Brusce prides itself on using only seasonal ingredients. This was definitely experienced by the taste of all of the dishes. They were of such a high quality and made for a thoroughly enjoyable tasty dinner.
