Turtle Bay – Camden

on

Turtle Bay was a very lively restaurant. This may have been partly due to it being Friday night and it was cocktail happy hour.  The restaurant is recognisable by the cute fairy light strings covering the front windows.

On entering the restaurant, there is a bar at one side and an open kitchen at the back. Some of the dining areas are sectioned off into open booths. Turtle Bay is very colourful and decorated with plants. The whole of the restaurant feels spacious.

Mocktails were the drinks of choice this Friday evening. The classic Virgin Kolada was perfect. The creamy coconut milk and pineapple juice blend is always so tasty and indulgent. The Guava Punch was a sharper zingier drink. It was made with watermelon, guava, lime and apple.

A couple of starters were chosen. The Sweetcorn Fritters were soft fluffy bread like dumplings. They had good flavour due to the sweetcorn and onions. They also had quite a bit of heat to them as they had chillies in them. The mango mole sauce went well with the fritters.

Doubles, the street food of Trinidad and Tobago, was a great starter. Slightly saucy curried chickpeas were the topping on these small fried rotis. The cucumber chutney and coconut strips added extra flavour.

As there was a fair bit of variety on the menu, we went with the staff’s recommendation of Brown Chicken Stew. Tender chicken thigh pieces and chunks of sweet plantain came in an onion and tomato based sauce. The stew had a barbecue taste. The Brown Stew was really delicious. The rice and peas that the stew came with was a good accompaniment.

The classic Jerk Chicken made up the second dish. This chargrilled jerk chicken was so moist and was cooked well. The chicken was covered with a jerk gravy. It wasn’t as spicy as it could be as we asked for spice levels to be reduced where possible. This dish also came with rice and peas. A good combination of chicken, rice and peas made this a complete dish.

Dining at Turtle Bay made for a nice Friday night out. The staff were really friendly, efficient and gave great service. The only thing that we found was that the restaurant music was quite loud, so to chat it was quite hard unless voices were raised.
