As Lugano is situated close to the Italian border, it does feel like you are in Italy and not in Switzerland. It still has the beautiful views of the mountains and lakes. There are plenty of piazzas, fountains, quaint streets, restaurants, gelato places and shops that make up Lugano.
As it was a gorgeous sunny hot day, it was delightful to have lunch outdoors on one of the piazzas. Federale does pizzas, pastas, risottos, polenta and salads. The Vegetariana pizza was chosen with tomato, mozzarella and grilled vegetables. As we were sharing the pizza, it was nice that the staff gave us our halves on individual plates with some salad.
The pizza at Federale was absolutely delicious. The base was thin, crispy and really fresh. A tasty homemade tomato sauce was topped with grilled courgettes, aubergine and peppers. It was not too cheesy either. The staff were friendly and gave good service. The food was brought out fairly quickly.
It was great to have a relaxed lunch, overlooking the piazza and sitting out in the sunshine. The lunch at Federale revived us for the rest of day and energised us for our exploration of Lugano.
