Walking along this street in the evening, it could easily be mistaken that there was no restaurant here. But then some tables and chairs were spotted under one of the porticoes. Osteria Solferino was found and our first Bolognese meal was about to be had.
Osteria Solferino is a wonderful authentic restaurant that felt rustic and classic. Dark wooden furniture and cream walls gave this restaurant a classic feel. The staff were really lovely and friendly. They were helpful with food suggestions and gave great service.
It had to be to tortelloni and gnocchi for this evening meal. The Tortelloni was filled with ricotta and came in a butter and sage sauce. The pasta parcels were big in size and generously filled. This simple dish of ricotta filled pasta in the butter and sage made the flavours and quality of the ingredients shine through.
The Balanzoni was tortellini filled with ricotta, Parmesan and Mortadella. This pasta was a spinach pasta and the filling of the cheeses and ham was a good combination. Again another wonderful tasty pasta dish.
The Potato Gnocchi were small fluffy balls served in tomato and eggplant sauce. It was generously topped with Parmesan. The rich tomato sauce with the eggplant was perfect with the gnocchi.
Osteria Solferino was a truly wonderful dinner showcasing absolutely quality Bolognese cuisine. It is situated towards the south of Piazza Maggiore. It is close to the cobbled Piazza San Domenico where the Basilica di San Domenico is.
